About

At the middle of student societies, events, and all around life happenings in St Andrews is The Saint. The Saint is the University's award-winning, top-class, totally independent student newspaper. It's packed full of gripping news stories, fantastic features, riveting reviews, all the latest sports reports plus a scandalous gossip page detailing who's been snogging/getting naked with who, where, when and for how long. Quite simply, if you want to get informed about student life in St Andrews, you can't afford to go without your fortnightly fix of The Saint.

There are two main things that make The Saint different from the average student rag. Firstly, it's totally self-sufficient - it receives no funding from any source whatsoever, relying only on sales and advertising revenue to get by. Although this means the paper has to scrape by on a tiny budget, it gives us the freedom to write what we want about who we want - you know that what you read in the Saint isn't toeing any party lines.
Most student newspapers in the UK are funded either by the university's Students' Union or the university itself. This allows them to buy lots of computers with professional-quality programmes and keep up to date with the latest technology. The Saint isn't like that. It's made on three average Apple Macs with standard desktop publishing software and a couple of scanners.
However, this hasn't stopped us winning awards - the second thing that sets the Saint apart from the pack. The Saint was named Best Student Newspaper in Scotland by the Herald in 2002 and 2003, and was runner-up Best Student Newspaper in the UK and Best Small Budget Student Publication in the Guardian Student media awards 2001.

The Saint is on sale outside the Union and the Library on the day that it is issued. It is also available from BESS and Tesco's (while they still have copies in stock!)

Want to know what 50p a fortnight buys you? Interested in writing, photography, business or design and layout for The Saint? Take a look below for a quick rundown of the six Saint-tacular sections.
News - In St Andrews it is possible to know all the news as soon as it happens. In seven pages, read the latest on what's happening in our town. As well as examining stories about bitterly fought student elections, in Unitrash we look at raunchy news from other Universities. For weightier analysis there is news focus, which looks at the crackdown on crime, our SRC reps and controversial estate agents.
Viewpoint - For a serious and intellectual slant turn to Viewpoint. As the name suggests, it is the section to check out in order to be exposed to the wide range of views held by students in St Andrews. The subject range is broad and sometimes controversial. We'll often turn our focus nationally or globally, but we also include pieces inspired by everyday life in St Andrews.
ST2 -
Features - Different to the grey old world of News, Features gives writers the freedom to write whatever they want as long as it's interesting, funny, or just applies to student life.
Reviews - Made up of four sections: Screen, Music, Games and Arts. Incisive, opinionated articles and interviews on a diverse range of topices from Hollywood directors to authors and chart-topping bands.
Sport - Swimming, hockey, football - students play them, so we cover them. The sports section reports on University sports in St Andrews, writes insights into the University sporting societies and reports on the Sunday League and the performance of St Andrews societies in competitions. Also commentary on national/international sporting events and interviews with sporting celebrities.
Halo! - all the scandalous gossip detailing who's been snogging/getting naked with who, where, when and for how long... (N.B. this section is not available on the SaintOnline, to check it out you'll have to get yourself a copy of the paper......!)

Working for the Saint looks fab on your CV, it's great fun and you won't be ashamed to show it to your mates back home. If you want to be a part of the Saint, there are loads of opportunities to do so. As well as needing lots of budding news, features and reviews writers and photographers, the Saint requires a competent team of design and business staff, and a growing number of web designers. No previous experience is necessary - most people who work for the Saint have had little if any experience of working on a self-sufficient publication. Check out the meetings page to see our next open meeting, or just pop along to our office on the top floor of the Union any time.
